You may know sweet almond oil as the carrier oil that allows you to apply essential oils to your skin. Not only is almond oil a great carrier oil that keeps your skin looking young and blemish-free, it actually has several other benefits for the skin, hair, and even in helping you achieve your weight-loss goals. {1}

What is the difference between sweet almond oil and almond essential oil?

There are two different kinds of almond oil: sweet and bitter. Sweet oil is extracted straight from the almonds we eat. This oil is referred to as a fixed oil. Fixed oils are what we know as the carrier oils for essential oils. This one in particular has great moisturizing properties for skin and hair. Bitter almond oil, on the other hand, is an essential oil. This oil is extracted from bitter almonds that grow from almond trees in the wild. These almonds are toxic and can have fatal effects if they are consumed. Bitter almond oil does not have any aromatherapy benefits like most of the essential oils we know and love. It has a wonderful almond scent, but that is just about all it is good for. Sweet almond oil’s benefits, however, cover a wide range of categories and far more numerous since it can be applied topically and consumed internally.

The benefits of sweet almond oil include:

1. Helps with Weight Loss

Many studies have found that regular consumption of almonds (and sweet almond oil) helps you lose more weight than when almonds are excluded from your diet. A common misconception is that foods high in fat can lead to weight gain. The truth however, is that a well-balanced diet with the inclusion of good fats (like almonds or almond oil) is actually helpful for weight loss. {2}

2. Treats Ear Aches

Sweet oil has the ability to loosen ear wax and to clear blockage in the ventilation tubes within the ear when it is applied. Simply heat a small amount of sweet oil in a pan. Only heat it for a few moments, or until it is warm to the touch, not hot. Lie down and use a dropper to apply two to three drops of the warm oil in the infected ear. Lie down for ten to fifteen minutes, keeping the infected ear facing upward. Repeat this process until the pain is alleviated.

3. Regulates Cholesterol

Sweet almond oil can actually lower cholesterol when it is ingested. When consumed regularly, almond oil has the ability to raise HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) while lowering LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). {3}

4. Protects Skin from Sun Damage

Almond oil contains anti-oxidative properties, which help it prevent structural damage that can be caused by too much exposer to damaging UV rays. {4}

5. Moisturizes and Nourishes Skin

Almond oil contains vitamin E and emollient properties that make it a great moisturizer for the skin. It is easily absorbed and will not clog your pores. It even works well as a massage oil. Almond oil can also effectively remove makeup.

6. Reduces the Appearance of Dark Circles under the Eyes

By placing a few drops of warmed sweet almond oil under and around your eyes regularly before bed, you can reduce the dark circles and puffiness under your eyes.

7. Aids in Digestion

If you suffer from constipation, taking 2 tablespoons of almond oil will work as a natural laxative to provide relief. You can put the almond oil over a salad or vegetables to make it super easy to take.
