10 Weird Uses for Olive Oil

Olive oil has proved to be a delicious salad dressing, cooking oil, and a heavenly dipping sauce for Italian bread (thanks Johnny Carino’s). But what you may not know is that olive oil has been applied cosmetically for thousands of years, and its uses are nearly limitless. Olive oil is actually loaded with powerful anti-aging antioxidants, making it perfect for your hair, skin, and nails. Here are 10 uncommon uses for olive oil:

1. Ear Wax Removal

Not all ear wax is bad, but an excess can block your ears and thus require removal. The American Hearing Research Foundation recommends using a few drops of olive oil to clean out your ears. Just put in a few drops, let it sit for a few minutes, then lie on a towel to allow it to drip out again.

2. Hair Treatment

If you have dry, damaged hair or split ends that seem to be taking over your life, olive oil works an inexpensive and effective pre-shampoo treatment. Warm some olive oil in the microwave, or add it to some hot water before applying to the scalp and ends of hair. Leave it in for 10 to 20 minutes, and then wash hair thoroughly.

3. Shine Serum

Adding a few drops of olive oil to the ends of hair after styling will give your hair a nice, glossy finish without the price of fancy hair products

4. Shaving Cream

Every girl has endured the traumatic experience of running out of shaving cream right when it’s crucial to shave. You can use your expensive conditioner as a backup, or you can head to the kitchen and grab some good ol’ olive oil. Since olive oil works as a natural lubricant, you won’t have to worry about razor burn or those annoying red bumps.

5. Makeup-Brush Cleaner

Cleaning your makeup brushes should be a monthly ritual. Make your own cleanser using two parts antibacterial soap and one part olive oil.

6. DIY Lip Scrub

Chapped lips? Add some coarse sugar to a teaspoon of olive oil and apply to your lips. You can even add a little splash of lemon juice for added flavor and acidic exfoliating properties

7. Cuticle Conditioner

Pampering your nails doesn’t have to come with the price of a salon. You can grow longer, stronger nails by using olive oil as a cuticle softener

8. Sunburn Soother

Out of aloe vera and experiencing the pain of too much sun? Try applying some olive oil gently to the skin for relief and fast treatment. Olive oil’s antioxidant properties help to repair the damage from some fun in the sun.

9. Moisturizing facial cleanser

Olive oil grabs ahold of other oil based products, making it an effective eye and face makeup remover. Just take about one tablespoon of olive oil, massage into your face and neck for two minutes, and then wipe off with a warm water-soaked cloth. Its lubricating properties will leave your skin moisturized and smooth as an added bonus.

10. Cracked Heal Remedy

Cracked heels can happen to the best of us. Fight this common sandal-wearing summer condition by applying olive oil to your heels every night before bed. Make sure to wear socks to allow the oil to really set in overnight.
