Spring Cleaning Tips for in and around your Home

  • Create an easy-to-carry cleaning caddy and fill it with the proper tools and cleansers to carry around while cleaning the inside of your home
  • Deep clean your home’s interior including windows, blinds, curtains, base boards, crown moldings and ceiling fans
  • Switch your ceiling fans to turn counterclockwise for cooling
  • Thoroughly clean the inside of your kitchen appliances, such as the refrigerator, stove/oven and microwave
  • Empty all cabinets, the refrigerator and freezer to wipe clean, only refill with what’s needed and fresh; discard of expired perishables
  • Move out heavy furniture to steam clean your carpets and rugs; if you have indentations in the carpet/rug  temporarily place ice cubes on the divots then vacuum thoroughly to pull up the wet fibers; turn/rotate your rugs to lessen damage in high foot traffic areas
  • Turn your mattresses
  • Switch out your heavy duty bedding for the lighter, cooler bedding
  • Clean out your closets and put away your fall/winter clothes and bring in the spring/summer clothes, be sure to get rid of items that no longer fit properly or are damaged & repair if possible or discard
  • Inspect your interior areas that have grout or caulk for any worn out places that need to be resealed
  • Inspect the exterior of your home for any cracks or damage to your mortar or siding from the winter months which need to be resealed
  • Inspect the roof for leaks or missing/broken shingles or tiles that need to be repaired or replaced
  • Clean out your chimney and rain gutters
  • Inspect all seals and trims around doors and windows to ensure that everything is tightly sealed and insulated
  • Protect your home against insects by treating the perimeter and yard with a pesticide that is right for your area
  • Arrange for an inspection of your entire cooling system and thoroughly clean all filters, ducts and vents
  • Spring is the perfect time for landscaping changes and updates like de-weeding the flower bed, trimming shrubs & trees and planting new plants
  • Before using your yard and garden tools/equipment, inspect them to ensure they are in good working condition, such as rust-free and sharpened
  • Prep your lawn tools by coat cleaning metal surfaces with vegetable oil to prevent rust, rub wooden handles with boiled linseed oil to prevent drying & cracking, and stroke a metal file along the angle of the blade to sharpen it

Sparkling Citrus Punch for a Crowd

Sparkling Citrus Punch for a Crowd

Preparation Time:  5 minutes
Total Time to Serve: 5 minutes
Servings: 30

Ingredients

  • 8cups cold water
  • 2 cans (12 ounces each) frozen tangerine or orange juice concentrate, thawed
  • 2 cans (12 ounces each) frozen grapefruit concentrate
  • 2 bottles (1 liter each) sparkling water, chilled

Instructions

  • Mix all ingredients in a punch bowl
  • Serve over ice

Special Touch:  For fruity ice cubes, drop small strawberry slices and mint leaves into a filled ice-cube tray before the water is frozen. Add fruity cubes to the pitcher or punch bowl just before serving.

Zesty Pepperoni Spread

Preparation Time:  10 minutes
Total Time to Serve: 70 minutes
Servings: 8  

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces (1/4 pound) stick pepperoni 
  • 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened* 
  • Cherry tomatoes, halved 
  • Crackers

Directions

  1. Remove casing from pepperoni. Cut two slices for garnish. Set aside. Slice remaining pepperoni into 1-inch pieces. In blender or food processor container process pepperoni pieces, a few pieces at a time, until crumbly.
  2. In small bowl stir together pepperoni and cream cheese. Refrigerate at least 1 hour to blend flavors.
  3. Let stand at room temperature for 1 hour. Garnish with pepperoni slices and cherry tomatoes. Serve with crackers.

*NOTE: Soften cream cheese in microwave at high for 15 to 20 seconds

Trail Mix

Ingredients

  • 8 cups Crispix® 
  • 1 1/2 cups Cheez-It Crackers Sunshine® Cheez-It® Original 
  • 1 cup small pretzel twists or sticks 
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 
  • 1 package (1 oz.) dry, ranch salad dressing mix 

Directions

  1. In 2-gallon, zipper-type, plastic bag combine KELLOGG'S CRISPIX cereal, SUNSHINE CHEEZ-IT crackers and pretzels. Set aside.
  2. Pour oil over cereal mixture. Close bag and gently toss until evenly coated.

  3. Add dressing mix to cereal mixture. Close bag. Gently toss until evenly coated. Store in airtight container.

Tropical Fruit Toss

Preparation Time:  20 minutes
Total Time to Serve: 25 minutes
Servings: 30

Ingredients

  • 2 navel oranges
  • 1/2 fresh pineapple
  • 1 banana
  • 1 kiwi
  • 1/2 cup red seedless grapes
  • 1 tablespoon or more each of sweetened coconut flakes, chopped macadamia nuts, and chocolate chips or chocolate or rainbow sprinkles
  • 4 slices of star fruit (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel and section one of the oranges. Cut each section in half, then add to a bowl. Wash the second orange and zest it into the bowl. Then cut it in half and squeeze the juice into the bowl.
  2. Peel, core, and cut the pineapple into chunks (about 1-1/2 cups). Peel the banana and slice it into rounds. Peel the kiwi and cut it into 1-inch pieces. Add the pineapple, banana, kiwi, and grapes to the bowl and toss well.
  3. Divide the fruit salad among 4 plates.  Garnish each with coconut, macadamia nuts, chocolate chips or sprinkles, and a slice of star fruit, if desired.

Three-Bean Pasta Salad

Preparation Time:  10 minutes
Total Time to Serve: 25 minutes
Servings: 10

Ingredients

  • 1 box Betty Crocker® Suddenly Salad® classic pasta salad mix
  • 3/4 cup sweet-spicy French dressing
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon red pepper sauce, if desired
  • 2 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped (1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 can (19 oz) Progresso® cannellini beans, drained, rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) Progresso® kidney beans, drained, rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) Progresso® chick peas (garbanzo beans), drained, rinsed

Instructions

  • Empty Pasta mix into 3-quart saucepan 2/3 full of boiling water. Gently boil uncovered 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Drain pasta; rinse with cold water. Shake to drain well.
  • In large bowl, stir together seasoning mix, dressing and pepper sauce. Stir in pasta and remaining ingredients. Serve immediately, or refrigerate.

Back Ribs with Sweet-Savory Sauce

Preparation Time:  45 minutes
Total Time to Serve: 45 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chili sauce
  • 3/4 cup grape jelly
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons dry red wine or Progresso® beef flavored broth (from 32-oz carton)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 4 1/2 lb pork loin back ribs
  • 3 cups water

Instructions

  • To make sauce, in 1-quart saucepan, heat chili sauce, jelly, wine and mustard over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until jelly is melted.
  • Heat coals or gas grill for indirect heat. Cut ribs into serving pieces. Place ribs in 4-quart Dutch oven; add water. Heat to boiling; reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer 5 minutes; drain.
  • Cover and grill pork over medium coals 15 to 20 minutes, brushing with sauce every 3 minutes, until pork is no longer pink and meat begins to pull away from bones.
  • Heat any remaining sauce to a boil, stirring constantly; boil and stir 1 minute. Serve sauce with ribs.

Grilled Bacon-Cheeseburgers

Preparation Time:  20 minutes
Total Time to Serve: 30 minutes
Servings: 12

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 small onions, finely chopped
  • 3/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 12 hamburger buns, split and toasted
  • 1 cup blue cheese dressing
  • 12 slices bacon, crisply cooked and broken in half

Instructions

  • Heat coals or gas grill for direct heat. Mix beef, onions and pepper. Shape into 12 patties, each about 3/4 inch thick.
  • Cover and grill patties 3 to 4 inches from medium heat 10 to 11 minutes, turning once, until no longer pink in center and juice is clear.
  • Place burgers on bottom half of buns. Spoon dressing onto burgers; top each with 2 pieces of bacon. Top with top half of buns.

Sweet-and-Sour Grilled Swordfish Kabobs

Preparation Time:  30 minutes
Total Time to Serve: 45 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • Bamboo or metal skewers
  • 1 lb. swordfish steak*, cut into bite-sized (1 1/2 to 2-inch) pieces
  • 1/2 cup purchased sweet-and-sour sauce*
  • 2 medium zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
  • 2  medium squash, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
  • 15 to 20 cherry tomatoes Additional sweet-and-sour sauce, if desired

Instructions

  • If using bamboo skewers, soak in water for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat gas or charcoal grill. Place swordfish pieces in large bowl. Add 1/2 cup sweet-and-sour sauce; turn fish to coat all sides. Add zucchini, squash, bell pepper and tomatoes; stir gently to coat.
  • Thread fish, zucchini, bell pepper and tomatoes evenly onto skewers.
  • When grill is heated, place kabobs on gas grill over medium heat or on charcoal grill 4 to 6 inches from medium coals. Cook 8 to 10 minutes or until fish flakes easily with fork, turning once. Serve kabobs with additional sweet-and-sour sauce.

*Substitution hints:  If Sweet-and-Sour is not for you, use Italian Dressing for marinating instead.  You may use chicken, pork or steak instead of swordfish.
